Story of the Day 9/22/2008

Aaron is having angst.
It is very Jewish to have angst.
It is also very Margolis-Greenbaum.
Generations of practice have gone into making him the angst ridden young man he is today.

His current angst is college-related.
Where will he go?
Will he get scholarship money?
Will he like it?
Will he find a girlfriend?
Things like that.

He emailed ball State to ask how many Jewish students they have.We know it is less than IU and Columbia, and we figure that if he divides the umber by two, he will have an estimate of the potential pool of females for him to date.
100 is an acceptable number. He thinks he could find someone compatible in that number.
10 is bad.
1,000 is a candy store.
It doesn’t’ guarantee success, but the odds look real good.

And he is worried about getting a job.
He reads articles about people who have to wait tables and work at clothing stores because they couldn’t get a job.

Of course, after OLAB, studying business as a dial major was dropped, but he keeps playing with eth idea of a dual major- or getting some other skill so he doesn’t’ have to go back to working at the Center CafĂ©, after college.

Tonight, at dinner, he said, “I could study ASL, and ten I could be an interpreter. They do all right per hour.”
I wasn’t sure what to answer.
“And I would have an advantage because I already know some sign language.”
I am even less sure what to answer.
I can almost see him doing it.

Except that Sarah told him that the ASL department at Ball State is lousy.

Ball State has a Hillel, but that is their only Jewish org. I had to check.
Don't forget to check colleges in eastern PA & northern DE. Auntie Lynne-Lynne will make matzoh ball soup & he can have holiday dinners with someone who signs worse than he does. Lots of nice Jewish girls on the East Coast.

U Del's Hillel has both Conserv & Reform svcs. It's only 20 min from my work. He can take ASL at Del Tech Community College (one of the girls in my class is majoring in speech therapy at UDEL, so I know they accept the credits). That's where Josh's gf is going. I don't think they have much of a Film Dept tho, looks like it's under English & Communications.

I have heard of team terps - 1 hearing, 1 Deaf, to make sure cultural issues don't get missed, but I haven't seen it in action. Except, which one would Aaron be? LOL

oy!!!!
anyhow, top issue is a good film dept- and , i hate to say this, he wd be the "hearing" part of that terp team.....that si becasue his first language was ASL.....which, when he was filling out applications, was a littel funny. They ask "1st lang if diff than Engluiish." And he was going to put in ASL- but we stopped him- becasue, even tough it is true, it gives a false impression.....thsi is becasue we are all so well adjusted. Right?

yes, am'am.
actually, we want him to live ina dorm- u haven't smelled his room before he takes that hamper of dirty laundry out and washes it.....

Your perception of "high priced" is skewed by your state of residence. Spend some more quality time in PA and just about anything will look cheap to you. Temple U is cheaper if he's a PA resident - find out how long it takes to establish that, I couldn't find it on their site.
